Glorious Global Grenaches

Food & Wine columnist Ray Isle has featured a handful of his favorite Grenache wines from around the world in the April 2019 issue. In the piece, he urges Pinot Noir lovers to give Grenache a try for its elegance and Syrah lovers to give it a try for its spicy power. As context, he explains that the grape is also the backbone of one the original great red blends, Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Grown around the world, he explains that it is “the most widely planted, yet (weirdly) little-known grape around.” Among the wines he recommends is the E. Guigal 2014 Gigondas for its “strawberry and cassis filled bottling sings of Grenache’s southern Rhone ripeness, and its tannins owe their silkiness to that variety, too.”

In the hands of Guigal, the rich ripe fruit and savory character of the wine bursts with sheer pleasure, yet the wine displays terrific refinement, complexity, length and ability to age.
