Starting of the new year strong, James Suckling has named Masseto to be the winery of the decade. Over the past two decades, Masseto has been dedicated, with razor-sharp focus, to creating a legendary expression of merlot in the heavy clay slopes of Tuscany. This is no small feat, as the efforts have resulted in a wine that is on par with the best in Bordeaux and Burgundy, causing Masseto’s reputation soars with each passing vintage. In the detailed feature, Suckling documents his long history and fondness of with the winery, ““I remember a tasting in Florence in 2004 when I sat next to the owner of Petrus, Jean-Francois Moueix, tasting the two wines side by side, and he exclaimed that Masseto was more than just a brother of his famous Pomerol – it is the ‘twin,’”
The piece also showcases the dramatic new winery that opened in the previous year and includes winemaker Axel Heinz’s philosophy on both the estate and wine making processes “Nothing is missing, and there is no more than necessary…Our wine making is about reducing the process, reducing intervention, with a ‘less is more’ philosophy.”
