Leading travel publication Lonely Planet published a dedicated feature, “On the Oregon Food Trail,” that delves into so many of the not-to-be-missed culinary attractions in Oregon. Amidst all of the fabulous restaurants, purveyors and experiences noted is a section touting the Willamette Valley wine region. Ponzi Vineyards, owned and operated by sisters Maria and Luisa Ponzi, is the only winery mentioned, and is credited as being a pioneer of the region that is now home to more than 500 wineries. Sitting atop the Chehalem Mountains, the writer elaborates that the “rich, volcanic basalt soil lends a blackberry, plum and cola-esque finish to pinot noir” at Ponzi Vineyards.
